FREE Visual Literacy Teacher Resources from the creators of World Literacy Day… Spellodrome!
We are delighted to report that Spellodrome (the creators behind World Literacy Day) have recently launched a set of groundbreaking FREE Visual Literacy Teacher Resources. These resources have been designed to cover all age-groups between 4-18yrs and are intended for use all around the world. They have included images and themes from our charity partner, UNICEF, to bridge the subjects of literacy, visual literacy and values education.
As technology advances and society becomes more digital, children are getting exposed more and more frequently (and at younger ages) to images, making the need for visual literacy more and more important as time goes on. In turn, these children are also exposed to these increased images in a less controlled manner than before.
Visual literacy is the ability to interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in the form of an image, extending the meaning of literacy, which commonly signifies interpretation of a written or printed text. Visual literacy is based on the idea that pictures can be “read” and that meaning can be communicated through a process of reading. (Source: Wikipedia)
To accompany these resources, Spellodrome is also offering a special FREE TRIAL offer.. click here to sign up for this free trial today!

VISS Primary School student and World Education Games UAE Ambassador, Zeena Zahidah, leads the way with tablet computers
Wednesday, March 6, 2013 – Sharjah, UAE: This week, students of Victoria International School of Sharjah (VISS) have been taking part in an official Guinness World Record attempt to achieve the greatest participation in an online game. Using tablet computers, they were encouraged to participate in the UNICEF World Education Games (WEG) by Grade 4 fellow student Zeena Zahidah, who was selected as one of two WEG Ambassadors for the Middle East.
Yesterday’s World Literacy Day saw hundreds of senior and primary VISS students aged from four to 18 bring in their tablet computers from home and get involved, challenging students from across the world in the online literacy competition. In the build-up to the three-day challenge, VISS students were shown how to download the necessary free apps onto their tablet computers and they have been honing their skills, practicing with the online warm-up activities. The games continue today with World Maths Day, and tomorrow with World Science Day.
Zeena is part of VISS’s challenging Enrichment and Extension Program, designed to enrich the curriculum in the Primary School, particularly creativity and rigor in Science, Mathematics and Technology. She was nominated for the coveted ambassador role by Graham Gordon, the school’s Enrichment and Extension Specialist, for being an academically versatile all-rounder and for her excellent problem solving ability, interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for her studies.
“The World Education Games is run by the same organization that operates Mathletics and the Middle East Math Challenge, which are very popular with the students, so we knew they would be keen to get involved in this exciting challenge as well,” said Graham Gordon – Extension & Enrichment Coordinator. “This has been an extremely valuable opportunity for Zeena, and for the whole school, to represent education in the region on the world stage.”
As well as the games being an enjoyable and challenging Enrichment and Extension activity, WEG also provided the opportunity for the students of VISS to fundraise for the UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) “School-in-a-Box” project. The project provides a ready-made kit of classroom supplies and materials to schools where children’s access has been limited by poverty and/or crisis. Each School-in-a-Box gives around 80 children the opportunity to start school and will have an immediate, tangible impact in poor communities. VISS students were asked to each bring in a donation of AED 10 to participate in the games.
“I was very excited and honored when I was chosen to be an ambassador.” said Zeena “I liked that we were helping UNICEF provide education materials for children around the world less fortunate than us at VISS through the School-In-A-Box project. My role as World Education Ambassador for the UAE meant that I had to encourage students, not just from VISS, but also from all over the UAE, and the Middle East to participate in the games and raise money for UNICEF. I created an online Ambassador profile, spoke on assembly and wrote three posts for the official WEG blog. It’s pretty scary speaking on assembly but I really enjoyed it” says Zeena.

Getting ready… and excited!
I can’t wait for the World Education Games to start. I’ve really had fun doing it throughout the years and get a rush of excitement whenever our teachers hand out the slip with our usernames and passwords. I think our school has been doing this since I was I in second grade (just so you know that is 4 years).
I’ve always loved when I’m sitting next to a friend in class, to start the 3…..2……1……Now! Then clicking at the same time, hoping we were competing against each other. My best friend hates math. But she really likes World Math Day and I always like trying to compete against her. And sometimes we do. Then if either of us struck out, that person would go over and watch the other play and try to cheer them on.
I also love the feeling you get when you see your name on the Hall of Fame. And now I see everyone typing at the speed of light and synchronized clicking across the classroom, getting ready for an amazing event that is fun and exciting. Good luck everyone… it’s great fun!
